I provide specialised counselling for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
I came out of the closet when I was 14. Let me rephrase: I realised what the word “homosexual” meant, which spurred my own crisis in sexual identity. Eventually I had to come to terms with the fact that I identify as a gay person.
This was back in the late 1980’s, when homosexuality in South Africa got you a beating, bullied and even killed.
It is now over thirty years later, and I have seen and experienced most of what ‘Gay Life’ implies: tragedy, heartache, being ostracised, being bullied, depression, anger and jealousy, not to mention the pain of gay relationships!
Did I mention sexual trauma?
My past as well as the friends and family around me, has equipped me with one of the most important tools necessary.
I have EMPATHY!
Living life as a gay person still has its challenges.
